We Have it Good

I am wary when things go my way. It means I better enjoy it while I still can for everything can just change in an instance.

Midori Hirota, a Japanese artist based in Jogjakarta, has been witness to the idyllic artist existence in the culturally rich region of Indonesia and seen how a disastrous event like an earthquake, can happen without warning, transforming a promising artist into a displaced, disabled person.

She opened an exhibit at the Green Papaya last week called "Back of Affection". These are photos of her work displayed at the gallery.

The figurines denote the people which inhabit our world. Maybe from the vantage point of the untrained eye, we are all the same. But the Creator made efforts to make each figurine special by giving it unique identifying quirks, however small it is. This concept is carried further in the next to-do by the viewer.

The exchange of small personal effects in exchange of the figurine represent the offering of oneself to get the trust of another. It shows an investment in getting "a piece" of the other person. In exchange for my figurine, I left my nailcutter. It was such a negligible object, but I felt somehow hesitant to part with it. Even though the figurine was more special, it was hard parting with a thing that was mine for so long.

Nice concept eh?

I admire Midori more for what she did for the earthquake victims in Jogjakarta. Here is a link to her site : www.midoriart.exblog.jp . What she did, in a nutshell, is employ an organized, efficient and effective way of delivering relief to the victims of the Jogja-earthquake. She has initiated a relief operation which benefited many villagers, and has now enough money to have 10 bamboo day-care centers built for the children of Jogjakarta.
