This afternoon, after the ocular we made at the Makati Shangrila Hotel for the PETA and other JF grantees reception, Jona and I made a pitstop to Ayala Museum. I really meant to go there, but only to give Ken his long overdue check payment. It was good that he was more or less unoccupied that he had time to show us around Gabby Barredo's exhibit area.
In his press releases, Barredo's artworks don't translate to much. Maybe because the colors he works with are nondescript industrial white, grey and glassy green. Oh, he does installations, sculptures... before I forget. I just hope I can secure an image of his works... I wish I always brought my camera with me. Sigh.
I better get a bigger bag. One that can accommodate my daily essentials: money, kikay things, mini-ipod, lunchbox and digital camera.
So back to Gabby Barredo. I actually liked his collection although I could not imagine people putting his works in their homes. The images are calm but also disturbing. The materials are mostly metal --- springs, cogs, wheels --- and they sometimes move, like machines! It's like Willy Wonka's punk rock metal nightmare. Wonderful. I hope he can design a theater set someday. That would be groovy.
Pieces I like are those that look like underwater corals but are actually moving spring coils set into motion by rotating rods; I also like that of the image with the girl whose hairs have wildly sprung from her arms (not just armpits) and flowed to the floor.
Next time, I will bring my digicam. Gabby Barredo's images are too precious for the internet! ha!
