It really seemed like a promising evening last Saturday. We had a full night to dawn itinerary for our visiting Japanese academicians to experience and explore the Philippines' gay life.
Rei, who along with his co-editor Roel, programmed an exciting tour of Manila's pink underside, bringing their experiences as editor of a Filipino gay magazine to good use.
The plan was to be from tame to wild. As token wholesome guide, I initiated a tour first to a transgender show to Club Mwah, a theater club similar to that of the Amazing Theater but a noticeable lack of Koreans in the audience and I think more manageable entrance fees. After that, we were to go to Malate, hub of Filipino gay-ness. We had arrangements to meet the owner/ manager of Bed Bar --- I love saying, "Are you going to Bed with us?" hehehehe--- a popular upscale gay pick-up place. After Bed Bar, we were to go see the Pride Exchange and Top and Bottom stores to see gay merchandise. After that, it was Library, where although not a totally gay place, is lorded over by gay hosts. We wanted to present a whole spectrum of the gay lifestyle to our guests. And then, finally, the piece d'resistance, a trip to the gay bar where "live" shows may be seen.
I was looking forward to the whole experience but I think the guests had enough already by 12midnight. Can't blame them though. They plane from Japan just arrived at 6:30 pm that day and it was already "showtime" for them.
Oh well...
