Unlike others, we almost grew up without pets, if you discount the terrorist geese, suicidal rabbits, and stray cats we had. What I meant is a pet that would actually recognize you and call you his/her friend.
Well, we have a dog now who is actually super-enthusiastic, really wild, when we're around. When we figure out a way to make him calm down and stay put, this will be an idea.
