Japanese Groupie

I have come to terms with the tasks that accompany my occupation. As I am token representative to our organization's events; shock absorber and sounding board, I have jokingly referred to myself as a yaya, nanny of the Japanese / Filipino artists we bring to the Philippines/ Japan.

From now on, I will empower myself and no longer be yaya (although no offense to all the yayas and nannies everywhere...) instead, I will be identified thus, a groupie.

The first days of this year, we were host to a Japanese drum group called the Yamato. They heralded the opening of Philippines-Japan Friendship Year with performances at the CCP (January 11), PETA Theater Center (Jan 12) and Marikina Riverbanks (Jan 13).

It was an exciting and successful project with lots of interesting side stories. Like the awesome arms of the drummers (both male and female... but who am i joking? am not looking at the females! hehehe); the shopping stint at the Greenhills 'fake market'; and the indoor disappointment at the Riverbanks.

Too bad I am on my way home... Tsk tsk tsk.

More tomorrow :)

Happy New Year!

In a jiffy, the new year's here again.

Everything's in a whirl in the office these past few days of 2006, that's why it tookme this long to greet the incoming year. Whew!

There have been a lot of things going on the last days of 2005 up til today that it would be a pity if I would not be able to document all these. But things as they are are crazy so... let me just say... ja mata! whenever that is ;)

Araw-Araw, Gabi-Gabi

Every morning I stumble my way to the office, still feeling hung-over from revelries, real and imagined. As I have been consistent with my tardiness (tsk, tsk, tsk) I have a good reason these days.

Because of the holidays, I have been busy attending Christmas parties and informal get-togethers and the shopcramming jams. Tis a busy season --- and as I am jolly by nature (by conscious effort), I am enjoying the rush.
Last night, I attended the PETA christmas party, whose theme is JS Prom. I actually fussed trying to find a gown that would fit me. Collectively, among me and my 4 sisters, we might have amassed (as in parang ill-gotten wealth) almost 20 gowns/ formal wear. What with all the weddings, debuts, and what-nots. Alas, it was a futile, if not utterly depressing attempt. Nothing fit me! You would think with all that material, something would .... but hmmm... Something fit me alright. The hanbok Tita Bel lent Joy for her presentation. I almost wore it but changed my mind. I put on the hanbok and wore my curly wig and yuck! I looked like a matronly Korean!

So, the gown idea was nixed and had to content myself with looking normal and decent. Good idea because with all the prom queen wannabes that night, I think I stood out in a nice way. Some of the female revelers looked like ninangs at a wedding. Not good. While the fags thought it was high season to bring out their beauty queen regalia and relive their fantasies. Ayayay!

<<>

<< The Prom King, Macky Aquino (who won on the merit of his wig) and Prom Queen, Vince de Jesus (who I think looked like the Prom Princess, (Phil -- who just got a nose job), and the Prom Prince, Nor Domingo, who also won Collapsing Star of the Year.

Underdressed but happy (Aires, moi, Wylie, and Jonjon) >>

It was quite a riot but since there was very little dancing time and the venue was well lighted plus they held bingo night?!!! wtf?! Why include a really middle-aged pasttime in an occasion celebrating youth and innocence. So with that, I bid goodbye.

Bad news, good news: Last night, I fetched my sisters in Megamall. It was already midnight and they were tired when I got there. When we got home, Dotie realized she left her bag in the restaurant! Her whole bag, mind you. she was that pooped. Lucky her that when we called up Hap chan Megamall, the bag was still there (they kept an eye on it) and they waited for her (as they close up at 1am). It seemed that there was nothing amiss from her stuff. Big sigh! God bless them this Christmas!

Thank you Book Bitches!

I bookmarked the Book Bitches' blog: http://thebookbitches.blogspot.com/ because I am also in love with books and they are very funny. They are testimony that people who read are sexy indeed. These are people I haven't met much less met, but I enjoy reading their thoughts. I love reading blogs!

Anyway, I took this book quiz from their site and this is what I got:

http://bluepyramid.org/ia/tpbbk.jpg">>You' type="" Take >< >
Deeply font>
by i>!
The re>Book'>http://bluepyramid.org/ia/bquiz.htm">Book
Quizat the Blue Pyramid.

Arrrrgghh, sigh. My results read:

You're The Poisonwood Bible!
by Barbara Kingsolver

Deeply rooted in a religious background, you have since become both isolated and schizophrenic. You were naively sure that your actions would help people, but of course they were resistant to your message and ultimately disaster ensued. Since you can see so many sides of the same issue, you are both wise beyond your years and tied to worthless perspectives. If you were a type of waffle, it would be Belgian.

Not bad at all. I like the schizo-part. hehehe.

End of the week, Christmas the next and still no gifts bought. Hello panic buying! The question is, do I still have money for shopping, what with all the mad spending (I couldn't even account) I've done these days... do I even have time??? I don't even have time to pay my bills. My cellphone service has been cut :( ei, but my credit card has been bugging me to encash my available credit. No way, man. No huge debts for this muse.

Bizzy Bi

Was a whirling dervish yesterday, caught up in meetings outside the office, enjoying free food and good company. It was an ideal work day --- a day spent out of the office! Yippeee!

Had a morning meeting which went very well, meaning we did most of our part and just need to follow up the tasks assigned to our other partners. We just have to be diligent in following through... especially as people are not so keen on other things except Christmas preparations.

Speaking of which, I have a small letdown today. The consultant I tapped backed out on me at the last minute. It was a good thing I called her up or else I might have waited for nothing. She said she was busy with other projects... yeah, right... busy with shopping. I heard her barking directions to not make "pisat the grapes!"

Anyway, after the meeting, we went to GSIS to see Luna's multimillon dollar --- oops, multimillion peso lang pala --- painting. ehehehe. I got my boss excited over a painting the GSIS purchased for US$50million! Good thing we passed by and found out that it was after all P46million. Whew! Or else, he could have reported it to head office to find na mali pala. ehehehe. sowi. anyway, it was too good to be true... purchasing a Luna for US$50million would put him in the league of Van Gogh and Cezanne... although, why not? he's our hero, isn't he?

Got treated to good Japanese lunch and an impromptu session on Japanese fare. Varieties were explained :) Much appreciated. Expecially the actual foodie. Gindara teriyaki never fails to fill me up.

We went back to the office only to switch bosses in the car. We were then off to sign a contract and meet with the managers of a band we're tapping for a project. What I like about attending meetings outside the office is the conversation I can share with whoever it is I am with. I get to know about their personalities and take a peek into their personal lives... anyhooo....

Although it was strange going inside a pet shop to conduct a contract signing, we had a fruitful though short and sweet meeting, with the band manager (who will remain unnamed) who kept yawning and closing his eyes, ready to fall asleep... poor man.

After that, I was brought to UP for another meeting with our conference consultant. Take note that these are different projects... kaya medyo hilo ang lola niyo. Was at the meeting venue too early so looked around for stuff to do.

UP is looking different but still feels the same... Edru Abraham and his group are still rehearsing at the Faculty Center, the people are still wearing their bohemian chic, and everybody has the right to air their opinion. Case in point: Ibalik si Erap symposium and book launching! Very interesting! Omoshiroiidesu! Very twilight zone. It was very weird being told by academics that what the middle class did was wrong --- driving Erap from the presidency. Oh well...

Back to my final meeting... it was relaxed and fruitful. Everybody in high spirits. Great meeting! Am so excited for this project. Actually, am excited for all the projects next year.

Better visualize myself in Tokyo... I hope to have my efforts take fruit that way... Sigh!

All this busy-ness, I paused a while to say a silent prayer for Eury who was buried yesterday. My friend was brought to his final resting place.

Stringing Happy Memories

The past week was tough. A wake and a coupla parties. It gets confusing and stressful, this rollercoaster of emotions.

I already cried for Eury, although not the weeping kind but the teary-eyed way. I guess I am hopeful that wherever he is now, he is better off. I was at his wake for 3 nights. The first night I went with Tito Ernie, on behalf of PETA. That was when I got emotional and sobbed a bit. The second night I went with Sheila after our office Christmas party, to attend NCCA night, and then last Saturday with Che and Maan.

Maan and Che were still angry and upset about the circumstances of Eury's death. Still full of what-ifs. Meanwhile, I think it is all futile. There is no more possibility for Eury. What-ifs could have happened way before this sad event.

The photo up there was an impromptu get-together with NCCA friends at Gateway Starbucks after Butch's mom's wake. When Tet and I met at Eury's wake, we told each other,"we better not see each other soon..." half-meaning the joke.

I gave a testimonial for Eury and I know what I shared was not particularly deep nor though-provoking, but I wish he heard it. I will miss Eury.

Thursday night, despite a splitting migraine, I rushed to Dapo in Quezon City to meet up with PETA friends and Evert de Boer, our friend from the FGN, Netherlands. It was great seeing all of them, although I was late and everybody had finished eating... it was nice talking and catching up on news on our families in Holland. I hope I can still communicate with Tita Beulah.

The following day, I wasn't able to wake up early so I came to work only for half-a-day. It's good that I didn't hear too much about my halfday absence, because it was already nerve-wracking, trying to make everybody happy... but it was all worth it. The office Christmas party was so much fun! Everybody said so! I will not post any office party pictures to save the guilty happy people :)

Oh, was I glad that I took a half-day benkiyoushimasu-ing for my nihongo finals because otherwise I would've gotten a big fat zero! Wonder of wonders! I got a 32/40 and 26/30! Yipppeee!!!

Enough reason to celebrate! After class, my classmates and I treated sensei to Nagomi, a restaurant owned by a classmate. Authentic Japanese fare that would have cost us a coupla thousands if not for the big big discount!!! yooohhoooo!!! thank you isono-san! Documenting isn't my forte as I haven't taken a picture of my oishii lunch -- salmon teriyaki and shrimp tempura. Final grammar exams and nihongo class party next week.

Yesterday, we celebrated Dotie's party at Pizza Hut Bistro Gateway. It is getting to be a habit, us celebrating there but it really is convenient and nice! The waiters are a goodlooking lot too. I hope Dotie had a happy birthday. I know I enjoyed her birthday. The pictures are posted for you to judge if it were indeed happy.

These are nice photos, don't you think?

Dotie making like Imang...

The real thing >>

Why You Are Not My Friend

She called this morning a total of --- count 'em --- 4 times!
I hate to say it, but she is pesky already. She who sends sms from the beyond. She of the needy messages, hungry for assurance... for what? Persistence and peskiness--- she's crossed the line. No borders for her. She would like to think she understands me. I hope she understands this--- KEEP AWAY!

Gone

Eury's gone. Dead.

My colleague and friend succumbed silently to ,what I can only imagine is, excruciating pain. The reality of the situation still hasn't hit me yet. I still feel as if I can always ask Eury how he feels... how it is like to be dead... as if he's going to answer anytime.

I have not yet cried. I caught myself teary buying lunch yesterday but did not go into crying fits like some of our other friends.

All this in the month of cheer. It is hard to keep one's head afloat amidst all the busy-ness and stress of the holidays --- and to add this kind of grief, is enough for one to lose enthusiasm.

Such a roller-coaster. My demands at work --- the grants program... the office Xmas party which I will host... the projects that I'm handling... the surprises that are sprung up on me by my boss. Tonight I should be doing three things simultaneously: attending Eury's wake, celebrating Evert's visit to the Philippines, and studying for my Nihongo finals.

What do I do?

The Reason Why

I've been feeling weird and very emotional these past few days and I've wondered as I always have...

The reason is out.

The red flag is up.

Drama Stops and Starts

It's final. Kampanerang Kuba bows out on the 2nd week of December. So much for looking like Ann Curtis... it was fun while it lasted...

Here are some photos of me and Vince lest I forget that I was once the "voice". hehehe. As if it were that wonderful --- i mean the voice. the songs were beautiful!

Meanwhile, last Wednesday I watched "April Snow" starring Bae Yong-joon and Son Ye Jin at the Gateway Mall. It was so captivating that I watched again last Saturday, this time with Joy. It was such a quiet but intense movie. A lot of sadness but because also very hopeful. It reminded me of French films in its silence, despite it not being a silent movie. You know the type. A lot of driving, riding in trains, cabs, moving but not really moving... that type. A lot of thinking... It's everything I think my life must be... well, minus the pratfalls and social faux pas...my life actually looks more like candid camera... i mean, my boots disintegrating in the rain, while I was wearing it!!! it can only happen to me.

Bae Yong-joon is not just a hunk. He's a hunk who can act very well! And Son Ye-Jin, although she looks quite plain, you know, typical good girlfriend/ wife material, is so fragile in her sadness, that you want to protect her, which is what Bae Yong-joon's character, In-su did. Sigh. I am not like that. I probably cannot exude that kind of fragility, even if I tried. Oh to be a maiden in distress...

I read that some critics were comparing this movie with Wong Kar Wai's "In the Mood for Love". Well, I liked this movie better, that's for sure. April Snow is grounded in reality and does not sport beehive hairdos!!!ahahaha!

My favorite parts: When In-su and Seo-young return from the wake of the accident victim, wherein they were physically and verbally driven out by the family, and Seo-young requests In-su to stop the car so she can cry--- nay, wail, her grief. My gosh, i can relate totally. Her crying jag lasted till the sun set and it was a poignant scene when In-su just stopped the car, and then wordlessly followed her outside, to keep her company. In those situations, what else can you do?

More movies from Bae-Yong -joon! And not this pathetic one movie a year thing. Enough with the trips to Japan, BYJ!!! hahaha

Romulus d'Grayt (The Great)

I've been too busy with work that I was not able to update my blog on my superjampacked week last week!

Too too much anticipation. Of course, I exaggerate a bit... what could I do? Where do I vent my pent-up sense of drama?

Went to watch PETA's preview of "Romulus d'Grayt", a Filipino translation/ adaptation by Jerry Respeto of Freidrich Durenmatt's "Romulus the Great".

As in the press release:

Romulus D’ Grayt is an absurd comedy on the reign of the last emperor of Rome. Romulus, whoinstead of ruling an already crumbling empire andraising an army to defend it from its enemies, is seenraising chickens in his farm.

The verdict: It really is funny! There were a lot of times wherein I have laughed loud and reacted and I rarely do that watching plays. This was the first time I watched a PETA night (usually called "blood bath" in my DUP days) that was already that put together. All the elements were in place: the lighting, set design, costumes, acting... the actors were great! It is a stroke of good judgement to cast all male actors in the role.

<< Me with the chickies!

However, I had to leave just a little while after the second half started but some say it got pretty speechy then. Still, it was a good show. I hope to catch it this week :)

On the side: I was approached by Mai to cover for Noemi's part in Lola Basyang for the December shows. It is a pity that it's such short notice and that I have a lot on my plate at work. Sayang. they must think I have all the time in the world since they see me often in PETA thingies. Is it time to make a disappearing act?

Oh well.

Bloated Weekend

I didn't get to watch CCP's "Noli" last Friday. Plans were revised as soon as *Taki texted that he was back in Manila. Wow, just like a rockstar. (One of my favorite TV shows; although I know what I'm watching right now are reruns... INXS Rockstar...but I digress...) It was supposed to be a relaxing (maybe boring) night at the theater which was salvaged by a surprise italian binge.

The meeting at the CCP was fruitful and was finished at the expected time. And despite being antsy about being late for the get-together with Taki back in Makati, I got to sneak a peek at Brenda Fajardo's retrospective at the CCP gallery.

Twas an extensive body of work that spanned about 3 decades from her works in print to her present tarot card series. I admire the details and statements of Manang Brenda in her works, feminism and a pervading proletariat sentiment. That's me, an embodiment of a Filipina --- no longer in the traditional garb of baro't saya but still a Filipina in the way
I look, think, speak and feel. Wherever I am.

Which will be somewhere in Canada. If Taki's will will be considered. Che (who fetched me from CCP) and I met my cousin at Greenbelt. It was like time has not passed. He was the same as he left six months ago. Of course, emotionally and psychologically more mature (hopefully), but last Friday he was his usual jovial self.

I enjoyed his stories about his experiences in Japan and somehow I could understand his anxiety to leave the Philippines as soon as he arrived. It seems that if one keeps comparing the Philippines to other countries, the Philippines comes in as a poor option. It's very sad for one who thinks that this country is a veritable wonderland, where the resources are aplenty, the people are beautiful (inside and out), and that the weather is most always fine... of course, all of that is obliterated by the incessant graft and corruption reports....

Taki kept going on about migrating to Canada, or New Zealand, or Australia --- anywhere where the pickings are aplenty (or so he thinks).

The highlight of the evening last Friday was the sensational buzz brought about by tequila. One shot was all it took! Yipppeeee!!!! happinesssshhhh. and then home, jeeves. after all, i had a nihongo quiz the following morning.

Needless to say, I went to class, late and sporting a killer headache. Not really a full-fledged hangover. more like an irritation headache from the intrusive and raucous bathroom renovation project. From morning till evening, the universe was trying to test my patience... a test which I almost always failed, just like the nihongo quiz i wasn't able to take because i was tardy! aaaarrrrggghhhh!

My day read like a veritable Murphy's Law journal... my shoes (which was newly bought from the posh ukay ukay along the lrt station) broke, making me trail the silver strap; the man at the Mr. Quickie was on a 30 minute break, making me drag my feet for another 30 minutes; went to my voice class 2.5 hours early; and ... you get the drift.

The last culture activity for Saturday was the play, "Creeps" (by Lito Casaje's Dramatis Personae) which really was. Although the material was promising (reality TV) and the actors were competent, it was lacking oomph and a general excitement that comes along with theater. After 15 minutes, i've lost interest and it was mainly out of courtesy and the fact that i was in the front row, that i had to distractedly follow the whole play.

The play was about these three women (2 of whom were played by men/ gays) who divulge their lives and secrets to fulfill TV celebrity-hood. The premise is promising but frankly, we've seen more riveting fare on real reality TV, why endure 45 minutes of fantasy?

Anyway, it was a good time to touch base with Ces and catch with girl chitchat. After the play, we went to Hapchang Megamall to eat -- i had sharkskfin dumplings and ces had asado siopao. yummy!

The next day, the family (except Viki) met Jinju, Raul and Taki in Podium for lunch at 2pm :) It was hearty and yummy and full of kwento. It was so enjoyable, we still had coffee --- at Starbucks! Starbucks is getting to be a very expensive habit for us...

After all that celebrating, I now have three mouthsores --- painful indeed.

Life as Usual

Everything's normal and pretty smooth sailing... oh, except for our ongoing bathroom renovation project which left us waterless this morning.

Wednesday was my sister *Liz's bday and although I have a lot of unexplained feelings for her (regret, anger, resentment, ambivalence) I also can't help feeling proud and happy for her. She's obviously trying her best to prop herself up and I really hope she succeeds. She deserves to feel loved and appreciated -- even though that's how we would like to believe we tried to do to her, and we--- I kinda failed. Oh well... I'm still dealing with how to let go of these feelings.

I still fancy myself being the favorite sister of my sisters. And I've come to realize that I may be so NOT.

Life goes on, and we deal with things, whether they be peachy keen or crockful of s**t, the best way we know how.

****
I also got some sad news. Terrorist attacks in Jordan and mob riots in France are bad enough even if they happen far away and you wouldn't want that to happen in your country... and sometimes you forget that bad things just happen, without reason.

I learned that a friend of mine was stabbed in Gensan. He was unwinding after a tiring day of work and was enjoying his time with his friends. When he rebuffed something somebody offered him and his group, his friends were beaten and he was stabbed. That's so frightening. Especially since Gensan is so far away from Manila.

To make matters worse, even if he was on official business, the office is flaking on support for his hospitalization! That's why there's insurance coverage, bub. Sure sign of age: when you realize you need all these health plans and life insurance. Cheeeez.

That is so sad.

I hope something good happens this weekend. Not that there weren't some nuggets of beauty and kindness these past few days, there were a lot... but, you kinda gloss over them in the face of unfortunate events.

Tonight, I watch Noli Me Tangere at the CCP and tomorrow, I watch Creeps at Sinag Arts. Hope they're all good.

Tuesday at the Palace

At the Malacañang Palace to be exact. Yesterday, my boss and I went to the Palace to attend a halu-halo courtesy call for about 7-8 Filipino groups and individuals who've done some cultural/ artistic feat that warrant them extraordinary acknowledgement.

My boss was there as part of the international group which gave PETA the first ever Japan Foundation Award for any Philippine group/ individual for exemplary achievements in promoting international cultural exchange. Wish I could draw his reaction when I told him, "sir, don't be surprised that nobody from PETA might be there." Who accepted the citation from GMA, well, Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, PETA founder and Dr. Alejandro Roces, former PETA Chairman of the Board. Oh well.

There were a lot of side stories, like the Thai Ambassador who didn't know what the heck was going on at the Palace; or the really mediocre performance from the cited choir, Coro Cantabile ... I shouldn't be putting down a fellow Filipino artist/ group but I couldn't put it any other way... why cite them? why not give due credit to UPSA instead? Tell me why?

Oh, and although i really don't like how people treat those manning reception when their names aren't in the list... but it was such a big irritant when our names weren't on the list in Malacañang... and the ignorami in the reception were kinda lutang... hello, shouldn't we be on the list? we're the group who gave PETA the award... I mean, I shouldn't be bearing this angst until now if they didn't make such a big deal looking for our names and declaring that we weren't there. what should've we done? ay, wala ba? e di thank you, aalis kami?!!! WTF !

Anyway, the pro (hy-PRO-crite!!! hehehe) that I am, magkasama pa rin kami sa picture. Here's proof:

This is the President with the two trees...er... Ms. Earths --- in fairness, they're pretty and TALL!

My friend asked me what was so historical that I had to go to Malacañang--- hey, if the President goes on like this, she might be history sooner than we think...

I met my friend after work, making lambing, asking to be treated for coffee... it was great talking with her after some time. Although, she's caught up with the joyous rapture of her new relationship... sometimes, i want to blurt out, oo na! masaya ka na dahil may boyfriend ka na, at ako wala! but no, because i really am happy for her she found someone who can take care of her, and i'm just a bit jealous. hehehe.

Anyway, aside from free coffee, i got a free ride home, courtesy of my friend's boyfriend. How convenient. The ride home with them was full of telling details, like the guy's a rocker and he's kinda type A like my friend. How compatible. Like two peas in a pod... Enough with that!

I'm feeling out of sorts again. Need to find my balance. I have to sort out some late payments due me from my "other life".

No Soul for the Day

Today is All Soul's Day but instead of praying for our dear dead, I am at work and contemplating budgets and whatnot. I am thinking of no soul, not mine even.

I have wanted to go to a cultural event a day but I haven't been too successful so far. Since my last posting I have been to the Mekong Arts recital at the PETA Theater Center and although it was a cultural event, it was a cop-out because I'm a PETA member.

Anyway, I enjoyed the Friday Mekong showcase and the groups had very interesting and well-performed pieces, at least those that I've seen --- was late for 45 minutes. There was variety in the groups as there was a dramatic group from Vietnam, which I wasn't able to see but I heard from my organizer friends that they were "maarte"; a good dance group from Thailand which presented a piece on abuse against women; another theater group from Thailand which was so funny; and a group from Cambodia which fused circus and theater. The revelation for me that night was learning the 5 or 6 year old looking kid was actually 25 years old! yipes!

My bosses were also there but they left a little bit after cocktails to attend Kitchie Nadal's concert.... hmmmm.... they missed Noel Cabangon's set. now that was fun. Never mind that i received sad news... my married friends are getting an annulment after less than 10 years... would that be the seven-year itch?

Anyway, I danced my cares and 3 big glasses of San Miguel Draft beer away (yay! oktoberfest!). As usual, I forgot my digicam and had no souvenirs of the night, how I danced with the dancers from Cambodia and felt like the belle of the ball (that's what alcohol does to you...)

That was the most notable thing that happened to me. The rest are small pleasures, like finishing the Japanese series, "Beautiful Life" (Takuya Kimura is my new crush!); ukay ukay foray with my sisters, starbucks with them, pizza with my Tita Bel, Jinjoo and Raul (who had his stomach varicose veins removed ---- that was a first for me... varicose veins on the stomach...)

Foot in Mouth

I am usually a tactful person. Tactful to the point of excruciating uneasiness --- on my part.

Blame it on barely 4 hours of sleep, I became more loose with my thoughts and just let it all out.

I finally told *Pong off. She texted me that she misses our conversations and wonders why I've dropped off the face of the earth, at least the part where she is... so i answered her. Because she's makulit, annoying like a fly which comes back no fail to the crevice that is your nose, after swatting it again and again. Well, I told her she was makulit and not the fly bit --- honesty has its limits.

But true to her "persistent" nature, she asked what she's actually done. So I told her again. I told her I didn't like the way she goads people to answer her even if her questions are really nonsense and for the most part, malicious. I also told her that if she had to say something to me, she better say it to my face straight and not play coy when asked about details. Otherwise, it is just hearsay, plain and simple.

I felt a bit better after telling her off. At least now she knows and may be out of my hair. Cruel but unfortunately, true. I don't want to be really cruel but it's as if she has been poised for something, trying to nudge me/ anyone to react to her thoughts. KSP.

Oh well. Next.

I got a call from Vince this afternoon telling me of a night recording. Did I tell you that the recording session last night ended at 1 am this morning?!!! Preposterous. I feel especially bad for Miles who had to wake up or rather prepare for work at 5:30 am.

So when I got a call, it's not that I'm complaining (all right maybe a bit) but I let out my disappointment with going home late or rather early in the morning.

Got the message across, but maybe I shouldn't have added this bit: that the reason we ended late was because the musical director was late and the other singer was late!

Lethargy, Thy Name is Bumpy

I'm feeling out of sorts again. I should be doing a lot of things, not really hard, but you know easy little things --- drudge work, like cleaning my room and studying my Japanese, and organizing my closet and getting some recreational reading done, but alas! have not gotten down to it.

I was supposed to do all the above, but I was sidetracked by Super Rookie, the new Korean TV series I'm watching.

So now, I wonder, how do I manage to do all I should do with recordings every night after work. I now have recordings tonight and tomorrow night for the TV series I'm ghost singing for. Goodie! Another P10T in the piggy bank.

Anyway, can't wait for the coming long weekend !!!

Chuchi Is that You?

Had a really jampacked weekend. Am not so sure I've recovered already because sometimes I still catch myself gasping for breath.

Not a good thing when you're the singer.

Yesterday, I had two recording session with separate musical directors for the TV show I'm ghost-singing on. The first session was with Pipo Cifra, a very convivial fellow who is very talented as well, who was late for 1 HOUR! but was easily forgiven because he was so nice. I thought the 10am-3pm session was sooooo long but we used it all up. And we did only 2 songs!

The morning recording went well. The studio was so spacious and very comfortable. I thought this was a good indication that I will be going through similar conditions later that night when I record a song for Vince.

Ha! I wish! The recording was at 9 pm --- actually I was already there at 8 but the music still had to be recorded so I had to wait for an HOUR! again. The studio was small but clean and new. I was actually feeling sleepy because I just read while waiting. So when it was my turn to sing.... I could only manage to croak! Really, croak. Tragic.

It doesn't increase my 'ganda' points especially as the sound technician/ sound mixer was kinda cute...Was actually surprised that the owner of the studio got my contact details so they can call on me if they need voice talents for commercials...

Oh well...you win some... lose some.

Was very busy last week for the party we organized for PETA. Am so glad it's through. Still, the main comment was, we didn't have a stage manager. Sigh. Oh well. The stage manager was me. Who was also on stage, being the host. And the runner. And the performer. Lagari. It was a blur last Friday and all despite all the minor comments on the lighting, the microphone stands, the wrong name on the powerpoint presentation, it was all okay. Not bad for a darna production.

After all that running around last Friday, I decided to go all the way and continue the heck. Saturday, I had lunch with Che at Persiana, which was so near the Powerbooks sale I wanted to visit. Anyway, we pigged out on meditteranean food -- potato chips, pizza, gyros, mango shake & cake! There has to be something said for a sense of entitlement. I surely felt I was entitled to all the grub.

Got to the Powerbooks sale but left without purchasing anything because it wasn't so much of a sale. I thought everything was 70%, but it was just like their regular store sale, wherein the books I liked were just 20% off. Now why would I want to squeeze into an airless, cramped warehouse room (the sale area was just one room), and horrendous parking? So i left and got a massage!

Yippeee!!! I finally got to try Thai massage. The place I went to was really nice and relaxing, no frills but enough to do the job. There were some instances of pain especially when the attendant poked at me. Now what was that all about?!! Are dry massages really like that? But when I hear my bones crack and pop! Hallelujah! Love it!

As if it were not enough, I got a haircut and a hair treatment. Not wholly content on this indulgent rampage, I bought myself a cup of Starbucks joe. The punchline to this is that as I was savoring my cafe mocha, I felt a warm sensation down my front --- and although, I was lighthearted, that wasn't it. I spilled my coffee all over my shirt. Talk about juvenile. The universe telling me I should cut out the indulgences. Finito.

Later that night, I met Ces's new boyfriend, Macaroni Boy. Unfair that I don't remember his name, because he seems like a genuinely nice guy --- I mean he cooked baked macaroni for his girlfriend, her family and friends --- was even able to take home a stash. I'm happy that my friend seems to have found her other half.

Meanwhile, I wait for the first...

Sneaky Culture Pitstop

This afternoon, after the ocular we made at the Makati Shangrila Hotel for the PETA and other JF grantees reception, Jona and I made a pitstop to Ayala Museum. I really meant to go there, but only to give Ken his long overdue check payment. It was good that he was more or less unoccupied that he had time to show us around Gabby Barredo's exhibit area.

In his press releases, Barredo's artworks don't translate to much. Maybe because the colors he works with are nondescript industrial white, grey and glassy green. Oh, he does installations, sculptures... before I forget. I just hope I can secure an image of his works... I wish I always brought my camera with me. Sigh.

I better get a bigger bag. One that can accommodate my daily essentials: money, kikay things, mini-ipod, lunchbox and digital camera.

So back to Gabby Barredo. I actually liked his collection although I could not imagine people putting his works in their homes. The images are calm but also disturbing. The materials are mostly metal --- springs, cogs, wheels --- and they sometimes move, like machines! It's like Willy Wonka's punk rock metal nightmare. Wonderful. I hope he can design a theater set someday. That would be groovy.

Pieces I like are those that look like underwater corals but are actually moving spring coils set into motion by rotating rods; I also like that of the image with the girl whose hairs have wildly sprung from her arms (not just armpits) and flowed to the floor.

Next time, I will bring my digicam. Gabby Barredo's images are too precious for the internet! ha!

I am a Happy Ajjumma

Culture was the last thing on my mind this past weekend --- at least, Filipino culture in all in its permutations. What was on my schedule was a dvd marathon of korean movies I bought from Divisoria Saturday.

It was horrible going to Divisoria on a Saturday that the next time I go there for another dvd jaunt, I will go on a special leave from the office and shop to my heart's delight.

Joy and I bought a total of 9 korean dvds and most of them were must-sees on my list. Among those I've watched already, I really like Green Chair. Never mind that it is probably soft porn, but it gave hope to my ajjumma-ness/ manang-like state. The movie was about a really intense sexual relationship between a 32year old woman and a 19 year old boy/man. The story was flimsy (hey, maybe it IS softporn) and the characters were not fleshed out. I mean the boy was always there! Doesn't he have other 19year old concerns? School, friends, family? hobbies? All he provides is all too available sex. Not that I am complaining but... well, it would make it a stupendous movie if these details were looked into.

Segue to thoughts of longing. Sigh. I so wish my love life would blossom. It's been so long already that the excuse that the right one will come along--- just I wait --- is getting OLD. Oh well....

In Honor of my Workplace

You Are a Kogyaru!
If it's cute, you'll wear it. Fake and bake, hair bleach, and bright makeup line your bathroom cabinet. As for clothes - anything that's short and cute ("kawaii!").You are the prize object of all sorts of men - but you are really looking for a rich foreign guy. He'll find you out hanging out in Shibuya shopping at the 109, text messaging and sending photos over your cellphone.

Happy Weekend!

I love this! It's confirmed. I thrive on adrenalin. Especially good adrenalin! Oooohhhh, i just love it when things are looking up, after really so-so arrangements.

Today, I met with Marikina Riverbanks and Kitchie Nadal's people for the various projects for 2006 and so far, everything's a-okay!

Am soo excited.

Can't wait to plan for next year.... yippppeeee!!!!

Last night, I recorded a song for Kampanerang Kuba ( a sweet mother-daughter song) and I met Andoy and Eugene. Parang UP pa rin. I also love the fact that these highly recognizable actors/ directors are still down-to-earth. I love being an artist.

Sigh.

I'm off to watch a Spanish film at Greenbelt ---alone. I wish I can go with someone else but, such is life. After the movie, back to the books at home to do my shukudai and benkyoshimasu!

Otsukaresamadeshita!

Te Doy Mis Ojos... Y Mis Blusas, Mis pantalones, y mis sapatillas... ayayay

In my quest for cultural diva-ship, at least not just being a dilettante (look it up in the dictionary), I made a date with Felice to watch a Spanish movie at the Greenbelt 1. It was such an important thing for me that even the vicious pouring rain did not deter me from arriving at the cinema at 7pm.

And arrive I did --- squelching my way into Landmark. This is the second this happened to me. The first time I understand why I got soaked. I was challenging nature by not bringing my umbrella. But yesterday, I had an umbrella, and still got drenched!

So again, I bought another new ensemble --- simple as I could get (a shirt, clamdiggers and new open toe sandals)! I thought it would be a cheap date. Turned out I forked out about 700 bucks that night!

Oh well...

So, anyway, Felice and I planned to watch "La Ley de los Herodes", a satire, but because the screening that night was by invitation only, a Mexican thingy ----- and we knew of this only that night! --- we caught the other film, "Te Doy Mis Ojos", translated, "Take My Eyes".

It was an intense film about domestic/ marital abuse that engages one from beginning to end. The portrayal of the actors were so real, I was uneasy looking at some of the scenes. Most unforgettable scene for me was when Pilar, the female lead, about to leave for Madrid for a tourguide job at a museum was confronted and humiliated by her husband Antonio. There was this woman, excited at the prospect of a good job at a museum, carefully groomed and then this man, who is supposed to love her, care for her strips her of her pride, her dignity --- literally. And when Pilar reports this assault committed by her husband, she explains when asked if she was physically assaulted, hurt, broken, (I loosely quote) "no, i was not broken outside, but inside..."

The film ventured into the delicate dynamics of a marriage and the cycle of marital abuse. The actor who played Antonio really looked like a mean man, really piercing eyes, bushy eyebrows and imposing built. A shoo-in for the part. But when his character was shown going to therapy, trying to get along with his family and earning an honest keep as an appliance salesman, one can't automatically say that he's evil incarnate. in fact, I can relate to him.

I can just see how easy it is to lose one's temper just like that, at the slightest provocation. And one usually directs it to the person/ people he loves most. Been there, been that. Mental note: anger management therapy.

These are the other insights I got from the movie:
1. the importance of girl-friends -- the support and camaraderie we can give each other
2. that being with a man is not necessarily the only way
3. one must find what makes her truly happy and alive --- no violence involved. in Pilar's case, it was art.

Return of the Comeback

When people write "return of the comeback", I usually think, "can't they think of a better line?" Now, I can confirm. I can' t think of a better line.

I missed blogging partly because of work and partly because I don't want to be out of work. I got scared when I read that people were getting dismissed from their work because of posting blogs... say what the?!!

Anyway, here I am again, defying all that's ethical and proper, to document, not just the mundane aspects of my life, but more importantly find my voice.

Yes folks, I want to find my voice. i want to air my opinion. I want to be heard. I don't want to be just a sounding board of ideas, but a springboard for new ideas --- my ideas.

So instead of concentrating on the feeling and being a pencil pusher, I will regale you with my thoughts on my cultural, social life --- That will put to rest that I'm not doing anything, going out and meeting people.

So there.

For my sister

"The Special Two"
Missy Higgins

I've hardly been outside my room in days,
'cause I don't feel that I deserve the sunshine's rays.
The darkness helped until the whiskey wore away,
And it's then I realize the conscience never fades.

When you're young you have this image of your life:
That you'll be scrupulous and one day even make a wife.
And you make boundaries you'd never dream to cross,
And if you happen to you wake completely lost.

But I will fight for you, be sure that I will fight
until we're the special two once again.
And we will only need each other, we'll bleed together,
Our hands would not be taught to hold another's,
When we were the special two.
And we could only see each other, we'd bleed together,
These arms will not be taught to need another,
'Cause we were the special two.

I remember someone old once said to me:
"Lies will lock you up with truth the only key."
But I was comfortable and warm inside my shell,
And couldn't see this place would soon become my hell.

So is it better to tell and hurt or lie to save their face?
Well I guess the answer is don't do it in the first place.
I know I'm not deserving of your trust from you right now,
But if by chance you change your mind you know I will not
Let you down 'cause we were the special two, and will be again.

And we will only need each other, we'll breathe together,
Our hands will not be taught to need another's,
When we're the special two.
And we could only see each other we'll bleed together,
These arms will not be taught to need another...

I step outside my mind's eye's for a minute.
And I look over me like a doctor looking for disease,
Or something that could ease the pain.
But nothing cures the hurt you, you bring on by yourself,
Just remembering, just remembering how we were...

This is me. So much for anonymity. Posted by Picasa

Mulling

the previous post is topsy-turvy. i couldn't even caption my own photos... is there a better way to attach images to this blog?

things i am into right now (since i have a lot of free time after work):
1. reading "Sassy, Sexy and Single" or something of that sort by Marivi Soliven Blanco -- a lot of helpful tips and insights into the swingle life. mental note: lend to cecile.
2. watching "Celebrity Poker". Really compelling.
3. daydreaming about vacations and holidays in a courntry far far away
4. nihongo --- although, the novelty is wearing off... if you see and hear it everyday (and not understand it) sometimes, it gets to you
5. a super modified south beach diet. no carbs after 12, execpt for junk food when i'm craving after 6! hahahahah!

that's all folks!

Aaaaarrrgggghhhh!

Just got back from previewing a modern play in UP. I wonder if the play is too clever that I cannot understand or it's just plain senseless. I thought that the play was absurd ala "Waiting for Godot" or "Eight Characters in Search of an Author". Although the characterization of the directors of the play within a play within a play was sometimes funny. Sigh. Anyway, the juriy's still out. What do I know? I'm just a pidgin pencil pusher who occasionally acts for children's plays. hahahahahahah!

Am upset because i just posted a new post with photos and it got obliterated totally! Now I have to repeat the whole process. sheeesshhh.

here it goes.

A Month Later

I am now a full time pencil pusher. For the meantime.

A month ago, was agog and emotionally fatigued because of my crazy schedule. Full time office work, familial obligations, foreign language classes and a play opening in less than a month's time.

Now that I've excused myself from the play, I'm having more time in my hands than I imagined. I kinda miss the frazzled nerves and the being on the edge feeling, but for my health and sanity's sake, I needed to prioritize and slow down. So I backed out. Quit.

Nevermind that now I am tagged the"crying lady" in our organization. Nevermind that I will always be teased and probably even be ignored by some members. For a long time, I have never have been so clear on some things.

The last time I felt this was when I resigned from the British Council!

What do you know? This is the anniversary from my resignation from the BC! Hahahaha! Oh well.....

Yesterday, I attended the Theater Center's opening. It was a cozy gathering that was infused by a lot of goodwill and cheer. It is very exciting and fulfilling to be part of PETA's achievements, though very minute.

As my bosses are on leave and/or busy, will see if I can post some photos from my camera...
